Born
in
1952, Tyson Stephens grew up in Emanuel
County where he graduated from Swainsboro High School with
honors. He went
on to graduate Cum Laude from the University of Georgia.
Married
to Susan, his high school sweetheart, they made their home in Emanuel
County
where they have raised three children. He and his family are
members of
the First Baptist Church of Swainsboro.
Elected
as County Commissioner
in 1982, He was subsequently elected Sheriff of Emanuel County in 1984
and is
presently serving his sixth term as Sheriff. Sheriff Stephens
is a member
of the Georgia County Officers Association, The Georgia and National
Sheriff's
Associations, and the American Correctional Association. He
is a graduate
of Leadership Georgia, and serves on the Board of Directors for both
the
Georgia Sheriff's Youth Homes State Board and is on the Board of
Trustees of
Herrington Homestead, is the Chairman of the Control Group for the East
Central
Georgia Drug Task Force and was appointed in 1999 by Governor Roy
Barnes to the
Georgia Board of Corrections.
Sheriff
Stephens was the recipient of the
prestigious honor of "2000 Georgia
Sheriff of the Year" by the Georgia Sheriff's Association.
And was
appointed by Governor Barnes to serve on the Georgia P.O.S.T. Council
where he
served as Chairman.
Sheriff
Stephens was the
2002 President of the Georgia Sheriff's Association and currently
serves as Past President.
